Fade control for heart pine and art

UV Protection Window Film in Raleigh

Sun fading creeps along for years, and the first sign is often a dark rectangle on the oak when the dining table gets shifted. UV protection film stops nearly all of the ultraviolet light that does the damage and leaves the glass looking almost untouched.

What UV Window Film Protects in a Raleigh Home

Ultraviolet light breaks down dyes, finishes and fibers. Heart pine and oak floors develop a pale rectangle where sunlight falls every afternoon and a darker outline where a rug sat. Upholstery on the sunny end of the sofa fades first. Watercolors, prints, photographs and textiles on walls opposite a window lose color over years. Even kitchen cabinets near a bright window can yellow unevenly.

Plain window glass blocks some UV but lets a meaningful amount through, especially older single-pane glass. UV protection film blocks nearly all of it. It does not stop every cause of fading, since visible light and heat also contribute, but it removes the largest single factor without changing how the room looks.

Clear UV Window Film for Oakwood and Historic Raleigh Houses

Oakwood's Victorian houses and the late nineteenth-century homes around Blount and Person Streets often still have original wood windows, sometimes with old glass that has a slight ripple. Owners there usually have good floors, antique furniture and family pieces on the walls, and they do not want windows that look tinted from the street.

A clear UV film is the natural fit. It goes on the inside of the glass, changes nothing about the sash or frame and keeps the old glass character visible. Raleigh's local historic districts review exterior changes through the Historic Development Commission, and interior film that does not alter the window itself is generally treated as minor, but we suggest confirming with preservation staff if you are unsure.

Before filming old glass we check every pane. Cracked lites, loose glazing and paint on the glass need attention first. Film will hold a cracked pane together but it will not make an unsound sash safer to open.

UV Protection Film in Five Points and Chapel Hill Homes With Collections

Around Five Points and in older Chapel Hill neighborhoods near campus, many houses hold books, artwork and inherited furniture in rooms with big south or west windows. Collectors and framers already think about UV-filtering glass inside picture frames, but the room windows are the bigger source of light.

For those rooms we often combine clear UV film with a light heat film on the sunniest glass. The UV block is the same in both products. The difference is how much heat and glare they also remove. In a library or a room with a piano, keeping the space bright while removing UV is usually the priority.

  • Near-clear film for historic and street-facing windows
  • Combined UV and heat film for the sunniest rooms
  • Film for skylights and glass doors where reachable
  • Pane-by-pane checks on old and antique glass

UV Window Film Limits and Care

UV film slows fading. It does not make anything fade-proof. Visible light still reaches the room, and strong sun can still warm and dry wood finishes. For museum-level care, a darker film or interior shades used during the brightest hours add protection that clear film alone cannot.

Care is simple. Wait for the film to cure, which can take a couple of weeks in humid weather, then wash it with a few drops of dish soap in water and a rubber squeegee. During pollen season, rinse or wet the glass before wiping so the grit does not scratch the surface.

UV Protection Film Benefits for Raleigh Interiors

01

UV Film for Slower Fading of Floors and Rugs

Blocking nearly all UV slows the bleaching of heart pine, oak and finished floors, and keeps rugs from developing a faded stripe where the afternoon sun lands day after day.

02

UV Film That Looks Like Plain Glass

From the sidewalk or the sofa, a filmed pane looks like the pane did before, which suits historic houses, street-facing rooms and owners who simply want the glass to stay the same.

03

UV Window Film for Art and Heirlooms

Prints, photographs, textiles and painted furniture opposite sunny windows lose color more slowly when the room glass blocks UV, adding a layer of protection beyond framing glass.

04

UV Protection Window Film for Skin

UV film also cuts the ultraviolet reaching people who sit by the window for hours, such as home office workers at a desk by a south or west window.

Raleigh Questions About Fading and UV Window Film

If the film is clear, how is it stopping UV?

UV absorbers are built into the film layers and adhesive, and they screen out nearly all of it while visible light passes. You will not see the UV reduction, but a UV meter at the glass shows it clearly.

Will UV film stop my hardwood floors from fading completely?

No. Ultraviolet is the largest driver, though bright visible light and warmth keep working on finishes too. Rugs moved occasionally and shades in the brightest hours help along with the film.

Can UV film go on the original glass in an Oakwood house?

Usually, provided the panes are sound. We inspect each lite first, and the film goes on the inside surface so the exterior of the window stays as it was.

My windows are newer low-E units. Is UV film still worth it?

Factory low-E glass stops a good share of UV on its own. Adding film raises the block to nearly all UV, which matters most in rooms with valuable floors, furniture or artwork.
